Fault Lines Links – Thabo Sefolosha Sues NYPD For $50M

  • The NYPD were hit with a civil lawsuit filed by Thabo Sefolosha after he suffered a broken leg during a violent arrest in April 2015. The injury caused him to miss the remainder of the NBA season and playoffs. Sefolosha is seeking $50 million in damages.
  • San Antonio Officer Joshua Kehm has been put on leave after a video emerged of him body slamming 12-year old student Janissa Valdez last month. Valdez was suspended following the incident and has yet to return to school.
  • Walter DeLeon has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles and the LAPD for unlawfully shooting him last year. Officer Carlos Palacios claimed that he believed that a towel wrapped around DeLeon’s arm disguised a gun. DeLeon lost a third of his skull as a result of the shooting.
  • An Ohio judge has ruled that there is probable cause to prosecute Ronald Ritchie for making a false report for his 911 call which inaccurately described a situation involving John Crawford III and ultimately led to police shooting him dead in 2014. Ritchie called 911 and claimed there was a man walking around a mall with a gun. The gun turned out to be an air rifle, but on the basis of this report, Ohio police shot and killed Crawford.
  • A Utah judge dismissed Darrien Hunt’s mother lawsuit against the city of Saratoga Springs for the fatal shooting of her son. The lawsuit alleges that 22 year-old unarmed Hunt dressed in a cosplay costume and carrying a fake samurai sword, suffered excessive force and a violation of his constitutional rights when two officers killed him with six shots in the back.
  • The two Alabama officers involved in the fatal shooting of Melissa Boarts have been put on paid administrative leave. The officers claim that they pulled over Boarts and she threatened them with a weapon, leading them to shoot. Her family say Boarts was in possession of a pocket knife and they called the police fearing she would harm herself with it.
