Fault Lines Links – Judge To Rule On Release of Daniel Shaver Shooting Footage

May 5, 2016 (Mimesis Law) — Hi people, here’s what we’re watching:

  • A Mesa, AZ, judge is set to rule whether the video footage of the shooting of an unarmed man by police should be released to the public. Officer Philip Brailsford shot and killed Daniel Shaver in January while he was on his knees in the process of surrendering.
  • The San Francisco DA is set to decide whether to bring charges against the officers who fatally shot Amilcar Perez-Lopez as he ran away from the plainclothes officers. Police claim that Perez-Lopez, a Guatemalan immigrant, was shot after he allegedly lunged at them with a knife in February 2015. His autopsy, moreover, shows that he was shot several times in the back.
  • Philadelphia police shot and killed Richard Ferretti after a traffic stop on Wednesday where he allegedly tried to flee and pinned an officer between his car and a police vehicle. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
  • An attorney for one of the five Ohio Officers involved in a car chase resulted in 137 shots being fired and two unarmed black people dead in 2012 traded blame over delays in the trial with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty. The officers pursued driver Timothy Russell and his passenger Malissa Williams after hearing what they believed to be gunshots but turned out to be Russell’s vehicle backfiring. Officer Michael Brelo claimed he feared for his life leading him to stand on a police cruiser and shoot numerous times into Russell’s vehicle. Brelo, the only officer to be charged in the incident, was acquitted on manslaughter charges in 2015.
