Fault Lines Links: Wiz Khalifa Dropped At US Customs Over Hover Board

Aug. 24, 2015 (Mimesis Law) — Good morning, folks. Here’s what we’re watching.

  • Rapper Wiz Khalifa was forced to the ground and placed in restraints for refusing to get off of his “hover board” at LA International Airport. It was a bad moment for civil rights, but a nice bit of publicity for Khalifa’s hover board business.
  • A Louisiana state trooper is in critical condition after being shot in the head at a traffic stop.
  • A new story in USA Today found that police departments around the country are increasingly using tracking technology known as Stingray to solve minor crimes.
  • WNYC did a deep dive into NYPD records and found that just 5% of cops involved arrests since 2009 accounted for 40% of NYC’s resisting arrest cases.
  • In Chicago, police officers gave chase to a 14 year old boy and shot him twice in the legs. The boy survived. It’s not clear whether he was carrying a weapon or not.
  • The family of Mark Eric Henderson is suing the city of Woodbury, NY, and the three officers involved over his death in 2012. 19 year old Henderson had been fleeing a hostage situation when police mistook him for the suspect and fatally shot him.
  • Jerame Reid’s family is seeking a federal probe into his death after a grand jury decides not to indict the officers involved. Reid was shot by New Jersey police officers during a traffic stop in 2014.
