Fault Lines Links: FBI Investigates Missouri Jail

Aug. 26, 2015 (Mimesis Law) — Good morning. Here’s what’s happening.

  • The FBI has opened an investigation into use of excessive force by guards at the Jackson County Detention Center in Kansas City, MO.
  • A deputy in Texas is back on the force after being cleared of wrongdoing in the violent arrest of Deanna Robinson. The deputy was shown on video punching then pregnant Robinson in the stomach.
  • Celestine Allen died in custody last week at San Joaquin County jail. Authorities have opened an investigation into her death.
  • New Jersey police have identified 21 year old Julian Hoffman as the man shot multiple times by police on Sunday. Officers were responding to a man ‘creating a disturbance’. An investigation is ongoing as to whether both officers discharged their weapons and whether Hoffman’s gun was real. Hoffman’s father claims his son surrendered before being shot by police.
  • The family of Jason Lee Alderman is demanding a full investigation into his death on Saturday night in California. Alderman was allegedly robbing a Subway with a tire iron when officers arrived on the scene, shot and killed him.
  • New Hampshire DA has ruled that the fatal shooting of Andrew Toto by Officer Kevin Ruppel in January was justified. The man was inebriated and shot at the officer. It was found that even though Toto surrendered, he still posed a threat of death or serious injury.
