How 2 Billionaires Beat Ed Sheehy By Accusing Him of Doing His Job (Video)

June 14, 2016 (Fault Lines) — When Ed Sheehy, ran for the Montana Supreme Court in 2012, he was greeted by attack ads that stated “…Sheehy’s work as a state public defender in a high-profile death penalty case several years earlier, arguing that it showed the lawyer had “activist values” unsuitable for the state’s highest court.” The ad was funded by a group called the Montana Growth Network. MGN dropped about $650,000 on that race. Ed Sheehy lost that race. Fault Lines Noel Erinjeri sits down with Lee to talk about that race, and the disturbing trend of accusing defense attorneys of wrong doing for doing their job.

Even though apparently special interests (or political candidates) with deep pockets can be successful in dismantling a political campaign I have seen instances here in recent history California political campaigns that have managed to be successful despite the wide monetary disparities between rival political candidates.

What is needed is effective strategies to counter for candidates who are not so well-funded. Apparently SCOTUS decision Citizens United vs Federal Election Commision has changed the rules dramatically.

It’s too bad that people don’t remember historical context that even John Adams represented English loyalists (Boston Massacre) as their lawyer and still managed to become our 2nd President. “The Right to Counsel” should not be dispensed solely because of public sentiment.
